TP. 184 MICHIGAN HIGHWAY 35

This picturesque highway is a lesson in Capitalistic Deception that takes place every day throughout the world. It centers around the State of Michigan and its plan to build  Highway 35 to connect communities in the Upper Penninsula. Starting at Menomonee and heading for Barraga to continue west, it had to pass through the Huron Mountains, which posed 2 problems. One was terrain, and the other was power, and not the 120-volt kind. It seems that affluent people had purchased a large tract of land along the shore of Lake Superior that was acquired for 50 industrialists’ families from Detroit, Chicago, and Marquette back in 1889. Only these descendants can build homes, and another 80 invited families can visit the gated and guarded property. It is an exclusive “good Ole boy network.” The 26,000 acre parcel was set aside for the enjoyment of exclusive clientele that wished to protect valuable timber preserves for fishing and hunting privileges of its select members. No information is available about any environmental rape these “Founding Fathers” caused by their accumulated wealth, but unfortunately, humans will do anything to attain riches. Back to Highway 35. In order to access Baraga, back in the 20s, highways were built for cars and Hwy. 35 was planned. With the Huron Mountains in the way, the easiest route would be to hug Lake Superior’s coast. The Michigan Government, armed with Eminent Domain, scared the Huron Coastal Kings, and they sought Henry Ford’s influence. Ford convinced specific Michigan officials to abandon 35 after penetrating around 50 miles into the interior.  With a few personal visits and some loaded hand shakes, the entire Hyw. 35 project was scrapped. If you look due west of Big Bay past Powell on a map, you will see a dirt track called Blind 35, just before the Salmon Trout River, end abruptly. The western leg from Baraga to Ontonagon has been renamed Hyw. 38. That’s fucking AMAZING! No. That’s fucking POWER.
