Due to technical leaps and bounds in the scientific commune, especially the biological division, we have now added another dimension to our experiences in human suffering. As we wander the earth, we are under constant threat from physical principles such as acceleration forces (car crashes), gravity (falls from balconies and barstools), and injurious organic chemical interactions (poisons, bacteria, and viruses). The last group has been a thorn in all humans’ health since we climbed out of our trees and discarded our tails. Nature’s response was to give us an immune system that usually figures out and defeats these foes. However, if the immune system is compromised or inadvertently overreacts, these responses can kill its human landlord. The worst scenario is a family member that is now deceased. Because humans are a relatively new species of mammals, viruses have only constructed around 220 versions that could make humans sick. Not to be outdone, the persistent, meddling mankind started toying with bat viruses in high-tech laboratories. Utilizing science in the form of a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) machine and, possibly, CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) technology, they made a breakthrough that then broke out. These techniques can replicate, or rearraign, the ladder rungs either through heat or bacterial action. The viral vampires (technicians) were successful in mutating an existing bat virus. This new monster was released on a group of visiting, foreign, military personnel, and on outbound airplanes, they left. This neo pulmonary, infectious agent has mutated beyond the vaccines that were rushed together to head it off at the pass. Too late. It is here to stay. So now we have a 3rd scourge in the seasonal virus selection. You have the following options: the common cold, good old influenza, and finally, Covid/SARS in mutated states. Like an old credit card commercial, the question is now: “What’s in your lungs?”
