In a process invented by a couple of Brits and exported over to the Manhattan Project in the early 1940’s, man has learned to separate the good 235 uranium from the bad 238. Unable to do it chemically because they are both uranium, scientists and engineers have devised 3 known and 1 experimental method to extract the highly fissionable 235 away from the somewhat useless 238. The depleted uranium 99.3% scrap ratio does make for a good tank penetrating projectile because of its dense mass. It is also used as an explosive yield enhancer in nuclear weapons because it becomes fissionable with the introduction of high-speed neutrons being thrown out by the plutonium triggers. Waste not want not. The process used by the US over the last 70 years to build up high concentrations of U235’s stockpiles was the gaseous diffusion process, which was energy intense. The 2 plants constructed in the 1950’s used around 2.1 Megawatts each, per day. That’s 4 decent sized coal fired units dedicated strictly for this method.  The US has stopped the production of highly enriched uranium by this process, as it has deemed we have enough stockpiled on shelves throughout the country. Its value is listed as $15 million per kilogram due to the extensive engineering needed to obtain this commodity. Rather than have this valuable stuff lay around collecting dust, efforts should be taken to utilize this asset that is 215 times more valuable than gold as money in the drug world. Instead of carrying bags and bags of $100 bills around, drug dealers could just do deals with an ingot or 2 of 90% pure 235. Of course, no one will tell them of criticality that occurs when you bring too much of this element together. It’ll make rounding up these rascals so much easier as you can find their dead carcasses with a Geiger counter. Their last 2 days on the planet will be a nasty, painful death somewhat reminiscent of their hapless customers that fall victim to their products.
